What I’ve been up to…

I had planned to take some time off in January in order to prepare my portfolio - I really want to go freelance/contract and get some work in London or New York next year - but the big job I’m working on at the moment needs to be finished the first week in January so I’ve had to postpone that. So, instead I’m posting a quick update on what I’ve been up to. This instalment is print, with video and animation work to follow in a few days.

It’s actually been quite exciting in the last few months in the Learning Centre. We’ve had some interesting clients and some nice work produced, we’ve went beyond the usual DVD slip cases and posters done on laser printers to some nice Digi-Paks, magazines and even a folding fairytale house! There has been some new techniques used too - UV Spots, Metallic Pantones, die cutting and even foil blocking!

The first job is The Fashion Show, this is the “big job” that I’m cancelling my holiday for. It is worth it though, I’m doing a really nice glossy brochure with foil & varnish on the cover and a fold out centre. More over the creation of content is going beyond the usual - last week I was out as Art Director with models from Superior Management and professional photographer, Shaune McLauchlan, getting some awesome shots of the Higher Art students pieces. I’ve attached a picture that will be in the brochure, it’s not retouched fully yet but it’s an awesome work in progress. In a fortnight I’ll be directing another shoot at Summerlee with some of the pupils modelling the clothes on sale at the show.

There will be 5 shows in late January - here are the invites which are nothing too fancy as they had to be done in a day but I still managed to sneak in a metallic pantone!

Below is some photos of the “Photoshop for Schools” project that consumed the first half of the year (and most of the year before that). It’s 2 full colour magazine with a gloss varnish on the cover also.

This is a DVD cover for a corporate piece I was asked to make look nice. I did some simple illustrations and wanted them to be printed on recycled chipboard but the board wasn’t strong enough - so we faked it on uncoated reverse stock. I think it worked out ok.

This a 2 CD fold out pack I was asked to for a Chinese language product Michael did. I cleaned up the logo and made it into a seal which is in red foil on the front and gloss on the back. A few other decorations were added in gloss and foil also and the background is my favourite Metallic pantone again! I’m the English speaking voice on the disc as well. I  really must remember to put together a voice over reel in January too!

Another project that consumed me earlier in the year was “Traditional Tales” which was 12 nursery tales that myself and Eduardo illustrated and I animated together into a Flash based CD-Rom. For the packaging I devised a pack that folds up in to a little fairytale cottage! I wasn’t pleased with the sleeve however, we asked a textured leather like substrate and the logo was to be foil embossed. As it is the sleeve is very dry, but the boss refused to complain to the printers. Boo!
